'5 Things You Must Know
Before You Buy a Case
1.Will the case
withstand the abuse of common carrier handling? If the case
is to be frequently shipped via common carrier such as UPS
or FedEx.
a. the hardware such as latches, handles and wheels should be protected from
being broken off or damaged if dropped.
b.The hinge design should prevent misalignment of the case lid and base during
transit
c.The construction should support the weight of other cartons stacked on top
of it during transit
2.If the case is to be check on the airlines as luggage
a.It should be an ATA compliant design
b.Check with your airlines to know the size and weight restrictions
c.Do you need wheels and pull-handle?
3.What does ATA mean?
This typically refers to ATA (Air Transport Association of America) specification
no. 300; category 1 originally issued August 1, 1960 and revised January 15,
1996. It provides for the construction requirements, usability and performance
criteria of `reusable containers’ that are loaded on airplanes and expected
to withstand at least 100 round trips of handling. Many cases that are labeled
as ATA do not, in fact meet any of the requirements; most cases that are labeled
ATA meet some, but not all requirements and these cases are usually suitable
4.What is required if the case needs repair? Understand the warranty!
a.Hardware that is `field replaceable’ means you (the user) should be able
to replace the handles, wheels or latches using ordinary hand tools and the manufacturer
should provide replacement parts at no charge within the warranty period.
b.Cases that require return to the manufacturer for service means the manufacturer
is responsible for all repairs under warranty but you are responsible for shipping
the product to the return address. You should be able to send the item to a facility
that provides quick turnaround and is located within the U.S.
5.What options are available for the case interior?
a.Foam liner – this option provides a liner of 1” – 2” thick
foam covering the interior surfaces of the case
b.Foam Insert- This consists of layers of foam that fill the entire case; these
layers are configured as `pick ‘n pluck foam or solid foam that allows
you to create the interior openings you need for the items you need to protect
c.Custom interior – made from to your specifications to accommodate the
items you need to protect; usually made by water jet or die cut. |
